Windowscreen

Video, FullHD, 12 min, 2020

The video “Windowscreen” was created during Ullmann’s studio residency, when freedom of movement was radically restricted by the COVID-19 lockdown. The artist began filming the view from his Paris studio. He then asked photographers around the world to send him footage of their personal window views. Due to the circumstances at the time, we encounter strangely deserted streets and quiet backyards. Our gaze is drawn to small movements and details, such as a branch swaying in the wind. By selecting, editing, and arranging the material in a specific sequence, the artist created a virtual journey around the world. After each shot, a kind of digital curtain or roller blind closes and opens, giving the virtual windows a theatrical physical frame.
