How many times have you looked at your phone or swiped your fingers across the touchscreen today? Screens have become an integral part of our daily lives—informing, orienting, soliciting our attention, and constantly accompanying us. Video and performance artist Timo Ullmann (*1987) explores the technical and artistic potential of screens. Ullmann’s approaches to image and technology are unconventional and experimental. In playful and sometimes astonishing ways, he sheds light on the properties and relationships between the ‘analog’ and ‘digital’ worlds. Rather than asserting a dichotomy, he reveals and virtuosically invents moments of interaction between human and machine, between physical and virtual spaces, while making visible the dependencies between matter and seemingly ephemeral phenomena. In short: what images emerge at the transitions—where the screen becomes a mediating medium, a projection surface for our imagination, or a window into other spheres?
